We bought Kuna items from the sales stand they had there, but we didn't see any food or water for sale, so bring your own. The bathrooms didn't work that day, but we survived.

On a Wednesday, there were about 20-30 other visitors there. Dog Island is smaller than a football field & a popular stop. Our captain, Germaine, stayed with us on the island (except for one side trip) & left when we asked. Once we made it out to the islands, it was just beautiful. Our captain had other passengers & made a couple of stops, so the trip took about 45 minutes & was a little rough going out against the waves. We also had to pay $2 tax/person there at the hut + $2/person to the island owner once we got there. Once we made it to the beach area, we found a boat captain & negotiated $30/person round trip fare to Isla Perro. We were stopped again by the National Police & asked for passports. The Kuna charged us $10/person + $5 for the car to use the road. We saw lot of small crossovers once we got there & one regular sedan, so don't know if that's true or if those cars belonged to Kuna.

The drive was super easy, just one turn off of the highway, & did not even need a 4x4 in the dry season - paved road all the way with steep hills & turns but 5 places where it was washed out dirt - NOTE: we were told we would not be allowed on the road by the Kuna if we didn't have a 4x4. We rented a 4x4 from Dollar at Tocumen airport at a reasonable price (they won't waive liability but did waive damage coverage w/credit card). We were frustrated that we could not find direct numbers to anyone in San Blas to make boat reservations ourselves, although can help you with a boat to Isla Diablo only. After much research & debate, our family of 5 decided to go to San Blas on our own because all of the tour companies charged so much.
